MADISON, S.D. -- Sophomore Madison Nelson (Plattsmouth, Neb./Plattsmouth HS) was named the North Star Athletic Association Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week in an announcement made today by the league office.
Nelson began her cross-country season with a victory at the Bill Buxton Invitational, hosted by NCAA Division III Simpson (Iowa) College. She won the individual title with a time of 16 minutes, 14.4 seconds in the field of 39 runners on a 4K racecourse. The meet was held under hot and humid conditions, and Nelson started conservatively before overtaking the leaders in the final mile and cruised to a nine-second win. She broke Bellevue's school record in the 4K by nearly 40 seconds.
The Bruins will return to action in two weeks when they compete at the very competitive Greeno/Dirksen Invite in Lincoln on September 17.
