The rolling hills and blustery winds did nothing to slow the Bruin's Madison Nelson as she rolled to an NSAA championship victory today at the Platteview Golf Course. She was the first Bruin individual NSAA champion in any distance running event. Bellevue was hosting the meet for the first time and the challenging course enabled Nelson to jump to a lead early and she never looked back, finishing with a convincing 25 second victory margin. Her time of 19:58.4, just seconds from her season-best, was a remarkable time considering the hills and wind.
Three of five Bruin women running Saturday’s Mount Marty Cross Country Invite turned in season-best times while two others were just seconds from their own season records. As a team, the Bruins also posted a season-best team time, averaging 21:05 for the five-kilometer distance.
The Bruins finished eighth of eleven scoring teams with NCAA Division I South Dakota winning easily with a low score of 25.
The Bellevue University women’s cross country team had another good showing Friday, finishing just thirteen points behind Division II SW Minnesota State at the Wildcat Classic hosted by Wayne State.
Freshman Madison Nelson was just five seconds from the Bruin school record for five kilometers as she covered the course in 19:41.4, good for 94th place among 206 finishers.
Madison Nelson’s fifth-place finish highlighted the Bruin cross country season opener at the Bill Buxton Invitational hosted by Simpson College. Nelson was one of four newcomers running for the Bruins, leading the team to a third-place finish among four teams.
