Offense stays hot as BU piles up 6-0 win at Briar Cliff
SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Six different Bruins found the back of the net as the Bellevue University women's soccer team continued their recent offensive onslaught by defeating Briar Cliff University 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon at BCU's Faber Field.
BU improves to 8-1-2 with their third-straight victory while their fifth-straight loss sees the Chargers drop to 2-8-0.
Mia Hurt opened the scoring in the game's 28th minute. She jumped on a failed Charger clearance attempt just outside the 18, two-touched the ball around a defender, and beat keeper Caitlin Anderholm to the far post for her fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 BU advantage.
Layla Vazquez stole the ball from a Briar Cliff defender deep in the Charger area late in the first half and uncorked a shot from over 30 yards out that beet Anderholm high for double the Bruins' lead to 2-0. The goal was her first of the season.
Bellevue dominated the stat sheet to the tune of a 12-1 advantage in shots, 6-1 in shots on goal, and 2-0 in corner kicks, as they took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Adi Kasel further stretched the Bruins' lead with her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 48th minute. Prescillia Casu had the ball stripped in the box and Kasel jumped on the loose ball, poking it home past the goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead.
Bellevue scored two more goals in just over two and a half minutes with Katrina Avila bagging her second in the 51st minute and Olivia Wahl adding her third in the 54th to further extend the lead to 5-0.
Baylee Tex scored her fourth goal of the season in the 69th minute, with an assist credited to Beth Cowd, to account for the final margin.
For the game, Bellevue out-shot their hosts 24-3 overall and 14-1 on goal and won a 6-0 edge in corners.
Abril Cura needed to make just one stop for Bellevue to earn her fourth shutout of the season while Anderholm made seven saves for the Chargers in the loss.
Bellevue returns home on Saturday, Oct. 4 when they host Dakota State University at the Renner Dennis Outdoor Athletic Complex for a 3 p.m. kick-off.
