LA CROSSE, Wis. -- After a crazy end to regulation that saw both teams score inside the final five minutes, Sydney King scored the game-winner on a set piece to give Viterbo University a 3-2 overtime victory over the Bellevue University women's soccer team on Friday afternoon at V-Hawks Soccer Field inside Viterbo's Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Recap: Viterbo 3, Bellevue 2 -- OT
Viterbo's player of the game Sydney King gave the home side an early lead with her first goal of the game off of a free kick in the eighth minute.
The V-Hawks out-shot Bellevue 7-1 in the opening 45 minutes but were unable to add to their lead before halftime.
Bellevue struck quickly out of the halftime break. After the Bruins won a penalty, Emily Weyant stepped to the spot and delivered the spot kick into the back of the net for her 10th goal of the year to pull BU level in the 53rd minute.
The game remained stalemated until the 86th minute when a scrum in the box led to Emah Maahs finding the ball at her feet. She delivered a chip shot across the goal that rippled the back of the net to put the Bruins ahead 2-1. For Maahs, it was her third goal of the season.
A furious offensive push from Viterbo, led to the V-Hawks winning a corner kick in the game's final minute. King, the earlier goal-scorer, sent a curling ball into the box that Lara Boyum headed into the back of the net to level the score and force overtime.
In overtime, Viterbo won a free kick less than five yards outside the area. King stepped to the ball and delivered a shot low to the opposite corner to beat the Bruin keeper.
Sabrina Staufenbiel stopped five shots on goal for the Bruins, while Abby Breitbach made four saves for Viterbo.
Coach Tom White:
"We are disappointed to not come away with the victory today. I thought we edged it and played some good football through the thirds. Emah Maahs and Lays Freitas worked well together and Angela Miranda produced a good performance after a good week of training."
