Women's soccer visits Concordia to open season

This Week:
The Bellevue University women’s soccer team opens the 2011 season this week at in-state foe Concordia University on Saturday, Aug. 27. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Seward, Neb.
Series History:
This will be just the fifth time Bellevue plays Concordia with the Bruins holding a 3-1 edge in the all-time series. The Bulldogs defeated the Bruins 2-1 at Tranquility Park last season.

Scouting Bellevue:
The Bruins return 12 letterwinners and eight starters from last year’s team that finished 15-4-2 and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in program history.
Among BU’s returnees include MCAC co-Defensive Players of the Year Morgan Anderson and Meredith Shuman who anchored the Bruin defense that recorded 11 shutouts and held opponents to a 0.72 goals against average. The Bruins’ top returning scorer is Jenica Bloom who recorded six goals, three assists and registered 48 shots, including 22 on goal.
The Bruins added one transfer and seven freshman to the 2011 team. Goalkeeper Caitlin Stier transferred after one season from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Freshmen Crystal Chavez, Mercy Darkoah, Yaritza Estrada, Stacey Hanson, Sarah Hauxwell, Kenia Hernandez and Sammy Sinecio join the Bruins after standout careers at the high school level.
Preseason Rankings:
BU opens the 2011 season ranked No. 26 after earning 109 votes in the preseason top 25 coaches’ poll released on Tuesday, Aug. 16. The Bruins were just two votes shy of No. 25 Auburn University at Montgomery.
Bellevue was also selected as the top team in the 2011 MCAC women’s soccer preseason coaches’ poll released on Tuesday, Aug. 23. The Bruins went 5-0 in the MCAC in 2010, claiming the MCAC regular season and tournament titles.
Last Season Recap:
The Bruins finished last season with a 15-4-2 overall record and an undefeated 5-0 conference mark. They also advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history after winning the Unaffiliated Group Tournament title. Head coach Andy Nicolarsen was named the MCAC Coach of the Year for the third straight season.
Up Next:
The Bruins will stay on the road next week when they travel to Davenport, Iowa for the Saint Ambrose University Invitational. Bellevue will open the tournament against play SAU on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1:00 p.m. before playing versus Ashford University at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4.
