Women's soccer opens at home this weekend
Live Stats
The Bellevue University women's soccer team will begin its 2009 campaign at home this weekend by entertaining two non-conference opponents. The Bruins will host Iowa Wesleyan at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Tranquility Park in the season opener for both teams.
The Bruin men's soccer team will also tangle with the Tigers, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in their home opener.
The women's team will return to action at Tranquility on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest against Mount Mercy.
The Bruins return nine starters from last season’s 13-5 squad that finished second in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference. Three of Bellevue’s five losses were by one goal, including a 2-1 setback at 10th-ranked Park in the MCAC Tournament championship game.
The Bruins return nearly all of their offensive scoring from a year ago. In addition to a strong nucleus of returnees, Head Coach Andy Nicolarsen will welcome nine talented newcomers to the 2009 roster.
Headlining the list of returnees will be senior Whitney Ferguson, who was a first team all-conference and an honorable mention All-American selection last season while scoring eight points with three goals and a pair of assists.
Bellevue returns two of its top three scorers from last season including Anne Marie Lind (8 goals, 3 assists, 19 points) and Jenna Pendley (5 goals, 5 assists, 15 points). Lind was a first-team all-MCAC selection while Pendley was named to the second team.
The Bruins return a strong defensive corps that helped the 2008 squad record 10 shutouts. Morgan Anderson (3 goals, 2 assists, 8 points) and Anastasia Dascalos (4 goals, 4 assists, 12 points) both garnered first team all-MCAC recognition.
The big question mark for the Bruins entering the 2009 campaign will be at the goal keeper position. Freshmen Shalynn Durham and Sarah Boone will both battle for playing time in goal immediately.
