Women's golf in 12th place after first day at NAIA Championships

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Bellevue University women's golf team is in 12th place after the first round of the 27-team NAIA National Championships Tuesday at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Course hosted by Doane College.

The Bruins, who notched four birdies, fired an opening round score of 319 and are 18 strokes off leader Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University who leads the field with a first round score of 301.

Heather Wiquist (Embry-Riddle) is also the individual leader with a two-under-par score of 70. Wiquist was the only player to register an under-par score in the tournament field. 

Natalia Soria led the Bruins with a score of 78 which places her in a tie for 24th place while Maria Saavedra sits in a tie for 34th after a score of 79.

Renee Santoyo and Christina VonRiesen are both tied for 57th place with scores of 81.

Izzy Hernandez tallied a round of 83.

The Bruins will tee-off tomorrow (May 22) beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The tournament is a 72-hole event with the final round scheduled for Friday, May 24.
