JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- Bellevue University and the University of Jamestown traded shutouts on Saturday as the two teams split the four-game North Star Athletic Association series at Trapper Field. UJ took the opener, 3-0, before BU battled back for a 5-0 win in the nightcap.
Bellevue moved to 25-17 on the season and 10-6 in the NSAA with the split. The Jimmies are now 29-14 overall and 13-3 in league play.
The Bruins will travel to Seward, Neb., on Wednesday, April 23, for a 6 p.m. non-conference contest at Concordia University.
Game 1: Jamestown 3, Bellevue 0
The Jimmies took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single to left field by Maddie Spaeth.
Jamestown made it 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth on RBI doubles by Lauren Weigel and Kayla Quintanilla.
Katie Cunningham (12-7) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in six innings of work.
Hope Ransome (9-6) earned the win with the complete-game shutout. She allowed four hits with no walks and three strikeouts in seven innings.
Game 2: Bellevue 5, Jamestown 0
Bellevue used a pair of two-run homers and the solid pitching effort of Mariah Unverzagt to power the Bruins to the 5-0 shutout in the nightcap.
The Bruins got out of the gates quickly with a two-run homer by Breanne McMurtry, giving the Bruins an early 2-0 advantage.
An RBI double to left field by Laila Fiscus gave BU a 3-0 edge in the top of the fifth frame.
Kaitlyn Fisher provided the exclamation point in the seventh, launching a two-run homer to center—her fourth of the season—to cap the scoring at 5-0.
Univerzagt improved to 6-1 on the season, scattering seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in seven complete innings.
Abby Blair (9-7) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 4 innings.
