BU takes series over VCSU with Monday split
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team took the four-game series over Valley City State University with a split in Monday's final two games at Roy Smith Field. BU grabbed the opener, 6-1, before falling in the nightcap, 9-1 in six innings.
Bellevue is now 17-15 on the season and 4-4 in the NSAA. VCSU is 16-15 overall and 5-3 in league play.
The Bruins will host the College of Saint Mary on Wednesday, April 9, at 6 p.m. at Roy Smith Field. The Bruins' three seniors, Katie Cunningham, Liana McMurtry, and Alexa Sidel, will all be honored prior to the start of the contest.
The Bruins outhit VCSU, 10-7, and rode the solid pitching effort of Katie Cunningham en route to the 6-1 victory in the opener.
After Kaitlyn Fisher blasted a standup triple to right field on the first pitch of the contest, the Bruins took a 2-0 lead on an RBI single to left field by Cunningham and a sacrifice fly to left field by Breanne McMurtry.
An RBI single up the middle by Ashlyn Diemert sliced the BU lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
The Bruins responded in the top of the fourth frame with an RBI double to center field by Savannah Short and a run-scoring single to right field by Liana McMurtry, giving the BU a 4-1 edge.
Bellevue added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single to left field by Laila Fiscus and an RBI single up the middle by Breanne McMurtry, making it 6-1.
Cunningham improved to 9-6 on the season. She did not allow an earned run in the win, scattering seven hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in seven innings in the circle.
Cooper Klaahsen (1-4) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
Game 2: VCSU 9, Bellevue 1 (6 innings)
BU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single down the right-field line by Short.
The Vikings plated three runs in the bottom of the second, sparked by a two-run homer to left field by Ashlyn Diemert.
Kennadi Stone scored from third on a passed ball to make it 4-1 in the bottom of the third inning.
A sacrifice fly to left field by Avery Kuklinski, and a groundout RBI by Logan Gronberg made it 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
VCSU increased the lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of RBI singles by Katelyn MacNeill and Diemert.
The Vikings scored on a Bruin fielding error to end the contest at 9-1 in the bottom of the sixth.
Abby Dworak (2-2) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on three hits with two walks in 1.2 innings in the circle.
Madison Hazelton (5-3) earned the win, allowing just three hits with three walks and five strikeouts in six innings.
