The Bellevue University softball team returns to action this week with a pair of non-conference home doubleheaders scheduled. The Bruins will host NCAA Division III Buena Vista University on Thursday, March 31 before welcoming Doane College to Hall of Fame Fields on Friday, April 1. Both games this week will begin at 4:00 p.m.

Scouting Bellevue
Bellevue, winners of five of its last six games, is currently 10-11 overall and is coming off of a home doubleheader sweep of Grand View University on March 24, winning 4-3 and 8-7, in eight innings, at Hall of Fame Fields.
Kathryn Wardian paces the Bruin offense with a .422 batting average along with four doubles, seven home runs, 16 runs scored and 16 RBIs. Amanda Neumann is third on the team batting .349, four home runs and 16 RBIs. Jessica Guyle, last year’s MCAC Newcomer of the Year, bats .319 with six stolen bases and nine RBIs.
In the circle, Neumann also has a team-high six wins, 63 strikeouts and six complete games in 73 innings pitched. Allie Bartley is 4-1 and has registered 23 strikeouts and two complete games in 35 innings.
BU bats .287 with an on-base percentage of .338 and a .421 slugging percentage. The Bruins have also hit 28 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs and are 14-for-20 in stolen base attempts. The pitching staff has an ERA of 5.53 with 99 strikeouts and eight complete games this season. Opponents are hitting .306 against the Bruins.
The Bruins return five starters from last season’s team that finished with a 32-17 overall record and a 10-0 MCAC mark en route to winning the conference regular season and postseason tournament titles. Bellevue also advanced to its fourth NAIA National Tournament, falling in pool play.
Scouting Buena Vista
Buena Vista is 7-9 overall and is coming off of a 10-0 five inning victory against Elmhurst College (Ill.) in Clermont, Fla. on March 25.
Hannah Baker leads BVU with a .375 batting average along with five doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs. Susan Kies leads the team with 13 RBIs and eight runs while batting .308. The pitching staff is led by Chancey Wilcke who is 4-4 with a 2.86 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 49 innings. Tiffany Promes has compiled three wins this season and paces the team with 35 strikeouts in 45 innings pitched.
The Beavers have a team batting average of .243 with 16 doubles, two triples and six home runs. BVU is also 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts. The pitching staff has an ERA of 3.57 with 69 strikeouts in 102 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting .287 against the Beavers.
Scouting Doane
Doane is currently 2-12 on the season and snapped nine-game losing streak with a doubleheader split at Midland University on March 23.
Shelby Mendlik leads DC with a .350 batting average along with two doubles, four home runs, seven runs and 12 RBIs. Gina Falciani is second on the team with 10 RBIs. Jenna Alswager and Mendlik have each recorded a win for the Tigers while Jennifer Liddell has a team-high eight strikeouts.
The Tigers bat .256 with 17 doubles, one triple and nine home runs this season. DC has an ERA of 8.00 along with 24 strikeouts in 81.1 innings pitched. The opposition is batting .394 with an on-base percentage of .455 and a .570 slugging percentage against the Tigers’ pitching staff.
Meet the Coaches
Michala Cimino is in her second season at the helm of the Bruin softball program and guided Bellevue to the program’s fourth appearance at the NAIA Softball National Championship in her inaugural campaign in 2010. She has a 42-28 (.600) overall record at BU.
Cimino led Bellevue to a 32-17 overall record and a 10-0 league mark as BU claimed both the MCAC regular season and tournament titles. She also was named the 2010 MCAC Coach of the Year. Cimino is assisted by Kelly Cheshier, Julia Krejci and Katie Lefler.
Buena Vista is coached by Heather Hupke, now in her third season and has compiled an overall record of 30-52 (.366) at BVU. Hupke is assisted by Katie Kruse.
Barry Mosley, the winningest coach in Doane softball history, is in his eighth season as head coach in 2011. The Tigers set a school record with 28 wins in 2006. He is assisted by John Weihe and Don Miller.
Wardian named MCAC Player of the Week
POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. -- Junior outfielder Kathryn Wardian has been named the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week for the week ending on March 27 after helping lead Bellevue University to four wins last week.
A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Wardian went 5-for-10 with four runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs in four home games last week.
In the Bruins’ opening doubleheader versus Northwestern (Iowa) College on March 22, Wardian went 1-for-4 with one home run, three RBIs, two runs and two walks. In BU’s sweep against Grand View University on March 24, she was 4-for-6 with one double, one home run, four RBIs and two runs.
Hall of Fame Fields
The BU softball team will begin playing and practicing at the Hall of the Fields (14602 Harlan Lewis Road) in the 2011 season. The multi-million dollar facility was completed in 2009 and was designed to provide the ultimate softball experience to players, coaches and fans. It is situated on a beautiful 40-acre site in the southeast section of Bellevue.

POINT LOOKOUT, MO. - Bellevue University has been picked as the favorite to win the 2011 MCAC Softball Championship according the MCAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll released Sunday, Feb. 6.
Peru State College earned the No. 2 position in the preseason poll with a 20-24 record in 2010 (6-4 MCAC), while York College was picked third (9-23 overall, 4-6 MCAC in 2010). Rounding out the poll are College of Saint Mary (4th), Haskell Indian Nations University (5th), Oklahoma Wesleyan University (6th) and Central Christian College (7th).

BELLEVUE, NEB. -- The Bellevue University (10-11) softball team swept Grand View University (2-15) 4-3 and 8-7 in eight innings Thursday night at Hall of Fame Fields.
The Bruins scored two runs in the bottom of seventh on an error by the Grand View first baseman to escape with a 4-3 win in the opening game of the doubleheader. Amanda Neumann (6-5), this week’s MCAC Player of the Week, picked up her sixth win of the season with a complete game, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with six strikeouts.
Neumann’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth propelled the Bruins to an 8-7 win and doubleheader sweep of GVU in the nightcap. Allie Bartley earned the win, pitching four innings and allowed two runs on four hits.

Bellevue University finished the 2010 season with a 32-17 overall record and captured the MCAC regular season and tournament titles, while advancing to the NAIA Division National Tournament.
Kendra Gansz was named the MCAC Player of the Year, Alissa Crumley MCAC Pitcher of the Year and Jessica Guyle earned MCAC Newcomer of the Year honors. In her first season at BU, Michala Cimino was named the MCAC Coach of the Year after leading the Bruins to an undefeated 10-0 conference record.
Six Bruins were named to the MCAC first team including Gansz, Crumley, Guyle, Brooke Ellis, Allie Bartley and Erica McCoy. Kim Wees and Kara Erwin were named to the second team. Jenny Gawart and Katie Lefler gained honorable mention recognition.

The Bruins will conclude their eight-game homestand next week with conference doubleheaders scheduled against Peru State College on April 5 and York College on April 8.
