Men’s Soccer sweeps final NSAA Weekly Awards
Tobias Maertzke (Offensive) and Ben Martin (Defensive) earned NSAA Weekly Honors
BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Bellevue University swept this week's edition of the North Star Athletic Association Men's Soccer Players of the Week honors, announced Tuesday. Senior Tobias Maertzke was named Offensive Player of the Week, while junior Ben Martin was selected as Defensive Player of the Week.
Maertzke scored the match's lone goal to send Bellevue past Waldorf, 1-0, delivering the Bruins their first-ever North Star Athletic Association regular-season conference championship. He accounted for both of BU's shots on goal and his 32nd minute strike was the difference in the match.
Martin was strong in a goal in a match where he needed to be for Bellevue. Waldorf put five shots on target and Martin saved four of them (there was one team save as well) as the goalkeeper posted his sixth clean sheet of the season in a 1-0 victory.
Bellevue, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 national poll, claimed their first-ever NSAA conference regular-season title after shutting down Waldorf, 1-0, in the regular-season finale on Oct. 31. The Bruins completed their regular-season schedule with a 9-3-4 overall record and a 3-0-1- mark in NSAA matches.
Bellevue will be the number 1 seed in the North Star Tournament and will take on the winner of Thursday's match between fourth-seeded Viterbo and fifth-seeded Presentation. The semifinal match will be played at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at Rotary Field on the campus of Jamestown High School.
