Bruins open season at MidAmerica Nazarene

This Week:
The Bellevue University men’s soccer team opens the 2011 season this week when they visit MidAmerica Nazarene University on Saturday, Aug. 27. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field in Olathe, Kan.

Scouting Bellevue:
The Bruins return nine letterwinners and four starters from last year’s team that finished with a 13-6-1 overall record.
Among BU’s returnees includes junior forward David Lastra. The 2010 MCAC Offensive Player of the Year led the Bruins with 10 goals and 40 shots last season. The Bruins also return senior defender Tom Dodds who suffered a back injury that sidelined him last year and received a medical redshirt. He was a first team all-MCAC selection in 2009 and was a key component to the Bruins’ defense which registered 10 shutouts.
The Bruins added two transfers and six freshman to the 2011 team. Phil Dobbing joins the Bruins after playing two seasons at Maple Woods CC in Kansas City, Mo., while Earvin Esale played at North Country CC in Saranac Lake, N.Y. Freshmen Kwame Avitso, Jacob Cawsey, Robert Jackson, Juan Narvaez, Antonio Pinto and Sam Porter join the Bruins after standout careers at the high school level.
BU also returns sophomore goalkeeper Juan Cale and freshman midfielder Manuel Lira who both redshirted last year.
Graeme Eaglesham and Luke Baxter, who were both members of the 2009 squad, return to the Bruins this season. Eaglesham was named the MCAC Newcomer of the Year while Baxter redshirted in 2009 after appearing in five matches as a freshman in 2008.
Preseason Rankings:
Bellevue University men’s soccer program earned 36 votes in the preseason top 25 coaches’ poll released on Tuesday, Aug. 16.
The Bruins will face five teams in the preseson top 25 poll, including Oklahoma Baptist (No. 8), Kansas Wesleyan (No. 10), Grand View (No. 13), William Carey (No. 22) and Columbia (No. 23).
Bellevue also topped the 2011 MCAC men’s soccer preseason coaches’ poll released on Wednesday, Aug. 24.
Last Season Recap:
The Bruins won the 2010 MCAC regular season title with a 4-0 mark and ended the season with a 13-6-1 overall record. Bellevue finished second in the MCAC/DAC/Frontier Unaffiliated Group Tournament, losing 2-1 to the University of Great Falls in the championship game.
Up Next:
The Bruins will stay on the road next week when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. for a pair of matches. BU will play at No. 22 William Carey University on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7:00 p.m. before playing Northwood (Fla.) University on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 4:00 p.m.
