Briggs signs local standout, Fitch
BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Bellevue University men's soccer head coach Matt Briggs anounced today the signing of Shawn Fitch (LaVista, Neb./Papillion-LaVista HS) to a letter of intent to join the Bruins for the upcoming 2012 season.
Fitch, who is the son of Gary and Terri, was a four-year starter at Papillion-LaVista High School under coach Justin Menichetti. As a senior in 2010, he recorded four goals and seven assists to earn honorable mention all-Nebraska honors by the Omaha World-Herald.
"I have followed Shawn for a couple of years now, through his senior season at Papillion South and this summer while he played for my U19’s at regionals representing Nebraska," said coach Briggs. "He is a very talented player who has great athletic and technical abilities. He has a great right foot which allows for a fantastic range of passing and a great leap that makes him strong in the air."
He played club soccer for the Phoenix Futbol Club where he was a three-year captain for coach Gauthier Scherlizin.
"Shawn will join up with the team this spring and begin preparation for next fall where we expect him to make a big contribution to our squad as he is comfortable playing in a number of positions, either as a central midfielder, where he played for his high school or a right back where he played for the U19’s last summer," added Briggs.
Fitch joins the Bruins' earlier signees Jamie Henderson (Lincoln, England), Alan Carr (Lincolnshire, England), Gary Rafferty (Glasgow, Scotland/Pratt CC/Clydebank HS), Conor O'Reilly (Birmingham, England/Arch Bishop Ilsley Catholic Technology College), Matt Ward (Lincoln, England/North Lincolnshire College), Corey Smith (Ulvertson, England/Ulvertson Victoria HS), Leigh Veidman (Liverpool, England/Texas at Brownsville/IWCC) , Jo Maxwell (Maybole, Scotland/Carrick Academy) and Charles Samushonga (Glasgow, Scotland/Pratt CC).
