Bruins face Doane in 2009 opener
The 2009 Bruin men's soccer team will open the 2009 campaign at home with a 7 p.m. contest against Doane on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. at Tranquility Park.
Bellevue University head men’s soccer coach Matt Briggs returns 11 letterwinners and seven starters from last season’s 14-4-1 squad that captured the 2008 Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference title, advancing to the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship for the first time in school history. The Bruins finished the season with a No. 6 final national ranking.
The Bruins return a bulk of the offensive scoring from a year ago as well as starting goal keeper Sebastian Narvaez. In addition, Briggs will welcome 10 talented newcomers into the mix.
Headlining the list of returners is junior midfielder Mark Heath-Preston, who earned honorable mention All-American honors last season and was named the MCAC Offensive Player of the Year. Heath-Preston led the Bruins with 41 goals on 17 goals and seven assists. Junior midfielder Tom White returns after earning second team all-league honors a year ago. White was fourth on the team with 11 points (3 goals, 5 assists).
Anchoring the Bruins defense will be junior Kyle Kirkland who netted first team all-MCAC honors while helping BU notch 10 shutouts on the season.
Narvaez earned second team all-MCAC accolades while recording an 8-4-1 record with six shutouts and a 0.80 goals against average.
