Bellevue dominates Dakota Wesleyan, 11-0
OMAHA, Neb. – Mark Heath-Preston added to his team leading seven goals as he went back-to-back with hat-tricks helping Bellevue University defeat Dakota Wesleyan University 11-0 at Tranquility Park on Sunday afternoon in the Bruins’ third shut-out of the season.
The 11 goals for Bellevue is the second most in school history next to 14 set in 2002 when the Bruins defeated a first-year program in Haskell University. It’s the third time in program history that Bellevue has scored in double figures, the other time in 2005 against Central Christian College (10-0).
The scoring came early and often for the Bellevue University Bruins, 5-3-0, as they ran their win streak to two games this weekend. Kyle Kirkland set the pace for the Bruins only six minutes into the contest as he scored the first goal of the match on a corner from Jamie McCormack. Eleven minutes later Bellevue took a 2-0 lead when Mark Heath-Preston scored on a pass from Trevor Eastman as he returned the favor ten minutes later with Eastman scoring on an assist from Heath-Preston (25:10).
During a ten minute stretch right before halftime, Bellevue netted four goals taking a convincing 7-0 lead as Mark Heath-Preston recorded his second hat-trick in consecutive days. With his day over by intermission, it took three minutes into the second half for Bellevue to go up 8-0; Tom Garrick scoring his second goal of the year on a pass from Lee Welburn (48:44). Bellevue finished out the final thirty minutes with three goals winning by the score of 11-0.
In the game, the Bruins out-shot their opponent 34-3 with five shots coming from Mark Heath-Preston and four each from Adam Hooi, David Lastra and Ryan Cantello. The remaining shot were registered by 11 other players as Matt Briggs, in his second year as coach, emptied his bench by halftime. Mark Heath-Preston led the team with three goals and an assist as Casey Friend who tried over and over again to score, still finished with three assists in the contest. Tom Garrick scored twice and added an assist to help the cause. Luke Baxter (Lincolnshire, England) picked up his second collegiate career victory in goal and his first-ever shutout.
Dakota Wesleyan University, 3-5-0, will lose for the fourth time in five matches with only three shots in the game. Lance Mohr had two shots to lead the team getting shots from Adolfo Gonzalez and Bobby Baltazar. Jordan Werner will get the loss in goal allowing 10 goals with 11 saves giving way to Brady Schmidt midway through the second half. Schmidt finished with two saves allowing one goal.
