Bethel ends Bellevue soccer season
MCKENZIE, Tenn. -- The 6th-rated Bellevue University men's soccer team had their 11-match win streak come to a close in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round in a 0-3 loss to Bethel College (Tenn.) on Saturday afternoon.
Bellevue will have their season come to a close at 14-4-1 following the loss as Bethel will advance to the national host site in Fresno, California at 13-5-1.
The Bruins fell behind in the first half 0-1 when Bethel's Mario Vila Boa scored in the 35th minute. In the second half, Bethel added a second goal in the 60th minute on a Felix Obilo goal assisted by Vila Boa. The game was put out of reach 15 minutes later when Vila Boa scored his second goal of the match.
Bellevue and Bethel finished with 10 shots each, as they both committed equal fouls by the end of the contest, 17 for Bethel and 16 against Bellevue. The Bruins did have a 6-3 advance on corner kicks.
Ryan Cantello led the Bruins with three shots, one on goal, as Kyle Kirkland and Lee Welburn finished with two shots each. Sebastian Narvaez allowed all three goals playing all 90 minutes.
Bethel College got a match-high five shots from Mario Vila Boa who finished with two goals and an assist as Dawyne Smith had four shots off the bench. Massimo Collu-Marchese had the complete match shutout win with four saves in goal.
