Men’s Golf wins NSAA Team Championship, Gudino wins individual title
Bruins sweep top three places and put four on all-conference team
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Holding a 14-stroke lead headed into the fourth – and final – round of competition, the Bellevue University men's golf team widened their lead to hold off Viterbo University to claim the Bruins' first-ever North Star Athletic Association Championship at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course.
The victory marks the fifth-straight conference championship for the Bruins.
Diego Gudino began the day with an eight-stroke lead on the field and held off a pair of his teammates – Juan Gomez and Fernando Arzate – to claim the individual title after carding a 77 for a four-round score of 297. Gomez fired and even-par 71 and Arzate shot a 1-under 70 to finish at 299 and 300, respectively, as the Bruins claimed the top three finishes in the tournament.
The fourth Bruin golfer, Mike Hannon, carded a fourth round 80 to finish tied for 14th place with a score of 325.
Nicolas Handal, who did not compete in the fall portion of the tournament, shot a fourth round 80 to finish with a score of 157 over 36 holes.
Gudino was named Golfer of the Year and earned First Team all-NSAA accolades while Gomez and Arzate were both named to the all-NSAA First Team. Hannon was a Second Team all-NSAA selection. Rob Brown was named the NSAA Coach of the Year.
Next up for the Bruins is the NAIA National Championship from May 24-27 at Deere Run Golf Course in Silvas, Ill.
