Cruise paces Bruins over Midland, 77-68

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University men's basketball team used a 20-1 scoring run to erase an 11-point second half deficit as the ninth-ranked Bruins scored a 77-68 win over Midland University in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. Senior Jeremy Cruise led the Bruins with a career-high 22 points.
With the win, Bellevue improved to 10-2 on the season. Midland fell to 3-12 overall.
Cruised connected on six 3-pointers while also grabbing five rebounds. Junior Jelani Johnson added 16 points, six assists, and six steals. Junior Jeremy Arrington was the third Bruin in double figures with 12 points. Bellevue registered a season-high 13 3-pointers in the victory.
Midland was led by Marcus Messersmith, who poured in 13 points and Gavin Blum who added 12 points. Zach Rosenboom recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Warriors held BU scoreless for the first two and a half minutes of the game and raced out to a 7-2 lead until 3-pointers by Arrington and James Parrott knotted the score at 15-15 with 12:07 remaining in the opening half.
The two teams traded baskets until a 3-pointer by P.J. Mallette and a baseline jumper by Alex Knobbe gave the Warriors a 26-20 advantage with just under seven minutes remaining in the first period. Midland extended the lead to 30-21 following buckets by Blum and Knobbe at the five-minute mark.
A pair of 3-pointers by Cruise sparked a 12-5 Bruin run as BU cut the deficit to 35-33 at the break.
Cruise led BU in the opening period with nine points on three 3-pointers. Johnson added eight points, three assists, and three steals. Blum and Knobbe collected eight points apiece to pace the Warrior offense in the first half.
Midland built an eight-point (45-37) lead at the 16-minute mark following a 3-pointer from Mallette. A 3-pointer by Messersmith gave Midland its largest lead at 48-37 with 15:32 remaining in the game.
The Bruins quickly responded with seven-consecutive points to cut the defict to four points at 48-44 at the 13:52 mark. Three-pointers from Parrott and Arrington gave BU its first lead of the second half at 50-49 at the 10:52 mark. Bellevue never relinquished the lead as the Bruins nailed seven second-half 3-pointers and seven free throws in the final two minutes to secure the 77-68 win.
The Bruins will be idle until Dec. 29-30, when they will compete in the Morningside Holiday Classic in Sioux City, Iowa.
