Bruins cruise past No. 20 Concordia, 78-51

BELLEVUE, Neb. - Forwards Eugene Bain and Ousseynou Diop combined for 31 points, 21 rebounds and five blocks to help lead the ninth-ranked Bellevue University men's basketball team to a 78-51 non-conference victory over No. 20 Concordia (Neb.) University Thursday night at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
The Bruins have now won seven of their last eight games to improve to 9-2 while Concordia drops to 8-3 overall.
Bain, this week's MCAC Player of the Week, recorded his team leading sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Diop added 12 points, nine boards and four blocks.
Also scoring in double figures included James Parrott (11) and Jelani Johnson (10). Parrott also recorded six rebounds and five assists.
After recording a career-high seven assists versus William Penn last week, Jeremy Arrington also tallied five assists, without a turnover, while adding seven points.
The game started out tight with neither team able to go up by more than four points, but the Bruins took control of the game midway through the frame. After a CU layup cut the Bruins' lead down to one point, 17-16, BU went on a 19-5 run in the final 10:25 to take a 36-21 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs opened the second half by scoring six of the first 10 points in the frame to cut the Bruins' lead down to 13, 40-27, but they were unable to get any closer than 13 points the rest of the evening as BU shot better than 53 percent in the half.
Leading the way for the Bruins in the second half was Bain who scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds in the frame to help the Bruins pull away for the 27-point win.
The Bruins shot 50 percent from the field while limiting the Bulldogs to just 32.2 percent shooting. BU also held a 14-0 edge in fast break points and a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint. The Bruins' bench also outscored CU's bench, 30-15.
CU was paced by Tyler Byrd who finished the game with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The BU men's basketball team will conclude its five-game homestand on Saturday, Dec. 18 when they welcome Midland Lutheran University to the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The Bruins are 1-0 against MLU this season, defeating the Warriors 83-69 in Fremont, Neb. on Nov. 11.
