Central Christian upsets BU, 92-88

McPHERSON, Kan. -- Central Christian College upset the No. 8 ranked Bellevue University men's basketball team 92-88 Saturday night at the the Ed Pyle Sports Complex in McPherson, Kan.
The loss dropped the Bruins to 16-4 and 3-1 in the MCAC while the Tigers improved to 15-3 and 4-1 in conference play. It also marked the first time BU has lost a game against CCC (18-1 all-time).
Eugene Bain paced Bellevue with his team-leading eighth double-double of the season, finishing with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Avery Tyler scored a season-high 21 points and dished out eight assists. Also scoring in double figures were Jeremy Cruise with 15 points on 5 of 9 shooting from three-point range, Jelani Johnson with 11 points, and Ousseynou Diop, who registered 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
CCC was led by Gary Kaelon's 20 points and five assists. Also scoring in double figures for the Tigers included the MCAC's fourth leading scorer, Don Gavin, who finished with a double-double (18 points and 10 rebounds). Christopher Jones also scored 18 points and added eight rebounds and a career-high six blocks. Randall Conley scored 19 points off the bench.
In a half that featured six ties and 11 lead changes, the Tigers used a 12-4 midway through the frame to take their biggest lead of the half, 26-19. The Bruins responded with a 22-9 run, sparked by a three-pointer by Ben Imig to give BU a six-point advantage, 41-35. CCC closed the half by scoring 10 of the final 14 points to tie the game at 45-all at intermission.
The Bruins opened the second half by scoring 17 of the first 26 points to take an eight-point lead, 62-54. The Tigers were able to answer back with a 24-9 spurt to regain the lead, 78-72. A three-point basket by Cruise cut CCC's lead down to three, 78-75, with 4:25 remaining, but the Tigers scored nine of the next 16 points to take an 87-82 lead. Another Cruise three-pointer with 37 seconds left cut the Bruins' deficit down to one, 87-86, but BU was unable to regain the lead, falling 92-88.
CCC shot 57.1 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from three-point distance while holding BU to 46.3 percent overall shooting and 40 percent from three. The Bruins held a slight edge in rebounding, 39-37.
The Bruins will open a three-game homestand next week when they welcome Peru State College to the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 7:00 p.m.
