BU finishes off sweep of Jamestown to close out regular season
OMAHA, Neb. -- Ayden Makarus hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth of game one and the Bruins pounded out eight extra-base hits in game two as the Bruins swept the four-game North Star Athletic Association series from the University of Jamestown on Saturday afternoon.
Bellevue closes out the regular season with an overall record of 36-13 and a 19-1 mark in conference play to win the league by eight full games. Jamestown closes out the regular season at 32-16 and 11-9 in the North Star.
Game One: BU 3, UJ 1
Ayden Makarus broke a 1-1 tie with a majestic two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Logan Grant led off the frame with a walk and courtesy runner advanced to second on a sac bunt from Jake Lacey before Makarus went yard for his 14th home run of the year.
Jamestown struck first with a solo home run down the left field line from Ryan Muizelaar.
Bruin starter Kenji Miller (8-0) allowed just four hits after the first inning as he went the distance in the victory. He struck out six against one walk while scattering as many hits.
Bellevue tied the game in the second. Lacey led off the inning with a single through the left side and took second on a wild pitch. He stole third before coming home on a ground ball from Elijah Tanner.
Ryan Radkey (5-3) threw effectively but took the loss for the Jimmies for five holding, Bellevue to two runs on four hits before yielding the ball to reliever Ethan Petty who surrendered the long ball to Makarus.
Lacey finished 2-for-3 for the Bruins who managed just five hits as a team.
Game Two: BU 12, UJ 5
Scott Hansen led off the first with a home run and Logan Grant added a solo blast of his own two batters later to set the offensive tone.
Ben Patton put Jamestown on the board in the second with an RBI single and the Jimmies took the lead an inning later when Isaiah Roebuck drove in a run with a hit by pitch.
The lead was short-lived as Jake Lacey tripled home Steven Elsner in the third and the Bruins struck for four in the fourth. Nick Gravel delivered an RBI-single and Logan Grant smoked a single through the right side to score two before Lacey capped the scoring with a sac fly.
A two-run double from Steven Elsner in the sixth and a two-run single from Grant an inning later made it an 11-3 Bruin advantage.
Jordan Singleton got a run back with a solo home run in the eighth and Landon Runge singled home another to make it an 11-5 ballgame.
Makarus finished off the offense with a solo home run off the top of the batter's eye in the eighth to account for the final margin.
Gavin Wuschke (8-2) delivered a quality start for the Bruins to earn the win. He held Jamestown to three runs on seven hits across six innings of work while Brady Toth, Brody Burnette, and Teron Williams combined for three innings of relief work to close out the game.
Austin Shelton (2-2) took the loss for Jamestown, allowing two runs on two hits in just 0.1 innings of work. Five of six Jimmie pitchers allowed a run in their appearances.
Gravel and Hansen each finished 4-for-5 in the win while Grant went 3-for-5 with five runs driven in.

Bellevue will be the No. 1 seed in this week's NSAA Tournament being held at Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark in Dickinson, N.D. The Bruins begin their postseason journey on Thursday, May 1 with a 9 a.m. Mountain Time against the No. 8 seed. Full seedings should be available by the end of the weekend on the NSAA website.
