OF Danny Spongberg (Omaha, Neb./Southeast CC) has signed a letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic careers at BU beginning in the fall.
BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Bellevue University baseball coach Duane Monlux announced today the signing of Danny Sponberg (Omaha, Neb./Southeast CC) to a letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic careers at BU beginning in the fall.
Spongberg, a 6-0, 170-pound outfielder, joins the Bruins from Southeast College in Beatrice, Neb. He was an honorable mention all-Region IX selection in 2023 where he was coached by former Bruin Dion Parks. After a successful high school career at Creighton Prep in Omaha, he began his collegiate career at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kan., transferring to Southeast prior to the 2022 season.
In his two seasons at Southeast, Spongberg batted .401 with and OPS above 1.000 each season. He totaled 24 extra-base hits, 43 RBI, scored 94 runs, and stole 34 of 42 bases successful. The Storm went 91-31 over the past two seasons, reaching the NJCAA Western District Tournament both years.
Coach Monlux on Spongberg:
"We are thrilled that Danny has decided to come back to the Omaha area to join the Bellevue baseball program. Danny is extremely athletic and is a high-energy player. He does a great job of getting on base and has the ability to steal a lot of bases. He was a mainstay in the lineup for Southeast CC this past year and had an outstanding season at the plate, hitting over .400 for the year. We are excited to see him progress in a Bruin uniform."
Spongberg joins the previously announced Brady Toth (RHP, Boise, Idaho/Columbia Basin College) and Jace Wessels (RHP, Clarkston, Wash./Columbia Basin College) in the Bruins' 2023 recruiting class.
Bellevue is coming off a 2023 season in which the program reached the Avista NAIA World Series for the 16th time in program history. During the campaign, the Bruins posted a 48-10 overall mark, going 25-3 in conference play while sweeping both the NSAA Regular-Season and Tournament titles. BU parlayed the league's lone automatic bid into the program's 25th NAIA National Tournament Appearance, hosting their fifth Opening Round at Don Roddy Field and defeating Oklahoma City in the Championship Game to reach the Avista NAIA World Series for the third time in four seasons.
