Punch outs deliver Bruins sweep over Waldorf, PC
Corey Jackson and Charlie Patterson each struck out 13 in their starts for the Bruins in Saturday’s sweep as the BU pitching staff has now struck out 10-plus batters in each of their last five games.
OMAHA, Neb. -- Three Bruin pitchers combined for 27 strikeouts in 14 innings of work on Saturday afternoon to give the Bellevue University baseball team a pair of non-conference victories over Waldorf University and Presentation College at John Stella Field at Brown Park.
The Bruins (16-8) downed Waldorf (5-9) 5-1 in their first game of the day before going on to dispatch Presentation (4-17) by a count of 10-2 in the nightcap. Waldorf defeated Presentation 8-2 in the first game of the day.
Bruin pitching has now recorded five-straight games with at least 10 strikeouts. Four of BU's last five games have seen their starters record 10-or-more punch outs with the exception coming in Tuesday's staff day win over York in which four different pitchers saw the mound.
Game One: BU 5, Waldorf 1
Bellevue scored four third inning runs to provide more than enough support for right-hander Corey Jackson who turned in a dominant performance on the hill. Jackson (4-2) fired a complete game five-hitter in which he allowed just one run while striking out 13 against a pair of walks.
David Calderon-Tatis (0-3) took the loss for Waldorf after yielding four runs on six hits and striking out three over four innings of work.
With a 4-0 lead in the home half of the sixth, Alec Lee tacked onto the Bruins advantage with a solo home run. His third blast of the year, leading off the inning, provided a little insurance as Waldorf would scratch across a run in the seventh to avoid the shutout.
Lee, along with Conner Barnett, had two hits to lead the Bruins offense.
Game Two: BU 10, PC 2
Bellevue scored in every inning to back an exceptional start from Charlie Patterson (3-0) that saw the left-hander work six innings of five-hit ball in which he struck out 13 and allowed just one run.
Nine Bruins recorded a hit in the game with Zach Diehl leading the way with a 3-for-4 effort from the nine-hole. Payton Higgins and Josh Vaughan each delivered a pair of base knocks.
Bellevue opened the scoring with a pair of runs on an Alec Lee single in the first.
They tacked on two more in the second courtesy of a home run from Vaughan and a sac fly by Cody Banks.
Brenton Davis homered in the third ahead of Riley Baasch fourth inning RBI-single as BU pushed their lead to 6-0.
PC got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-single from John Froese but four more Bellevue runs over the next three innings put the game out of reach.
Gavin Lim (1-3), the first of three PC pitchers, took the loss allowing four runs on five hits in two innings of work.
Up Next:
Bellevue wraps up the weekend tomorrow with a 2 p.m. first pitch against Waldorf.
