Bruins remain alive with 8-7 win over Eagles

OMAHA, Neb. -- After falling to York College earlier in the day, the host school Bellevue University remained alive in the MCAC Tournament with a dramatic 8-7 victory in 10 innings over Oklahoma Wesleyan University in the final game of the day at Westgate Field.
Bellevue improved to 39-18 on the season with the win and will meet York at noon on Friday. The Bruins will need to defeat the Panthers twice to win the tournament and receive the automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament.
Oklahoma Wesleyan ends its season at 35-23.
Bellevue plated three runs in the top of the 10th inning on RBI singles by Ryan Knutz and Kelvin Nelson, while plating another run on an Eagle fielding error.
Eagles closed the margin to 8-7 with a two-run homer by Jose Ruiz in the bottom of the 10th frame. Robert Greco recorded a putout and a strikeout to end the Eagle threat and preserve the victory.
Greco (7-1) got the win, allowing four hits and two walks, while striking out six in four innings of relielf.
Trevor Cook took the loss, pitching all 10 innings, giving up 16 hits while striking out four.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning when Tylor Pavel scored on a wild pitch. Pavel led the game off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Brandon Thompson.
The Eagles answered back in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run to left field by Nick Palese.
BU responded with two runs in the top half of the third, scoring a pair of runs on RBI singles by Spencer Duggan and Thompson take a 3-2 lead.
OWU regained the lead in the third, scoring on a fielder's choice groundout and an RBI single by Nick White to take a 4-3 advantage.
The Bruins evened the score at 4-all on an RBI single up the middle by Lance Lutz in the sixth.
Jose Ruiz gave OWU a 5-4 advantage with an RBI single in the bottom half of the sixth.
A fielding error by the Eagles' third baseman Josh Davis allowed Kelvin Nelson to score and tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh.
Neither team scored again until the 10th inning where the Bruins' three insurance runs proved to be enough in the 8-7 victory.
