BU sweeps Dakota State, 16-7, 10-1

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball team recorded a doubleheader non-conference sweep over Dakota State University Saturday at Westgate Field, defeating the Trojans 16-7 and 10-1.
Bellevue, which won three of four games in the weekend series, improved to 26-13 on the season with the two wins. Dakota State fell to 19-22 overall.
The Bruins will head to Sioux City, Iowa on Tuesday, April 10, for a 4 p.m. single nine-inning contest at Morningside College.
Game 1: Bellevue 16, Dakota State 7
The Bruins raced out to a 10-1 lead, before cruising to a 16-7 win in the opener. Bellevue pounded out 13 hits in the win.
Dusty Kerns and Brandon Thompson drove in four runs apiece and Sean Mattson knocked in three runs to lead the BU offense. Anyelo Roman went 5-for-5 with a double and a home run and Jason Hershfield drove in four runs to pace the Trojan offense.
The Bruins got out of the gate quickly, batting through the lineup in the first inning, scoring five runs, highlighted by a solo homer from Spencer Duggan, RBI singles by Mattson and Mason Castillon, and a two-run double by Kerns.
A two-run bases-loaded single by Mattson gave Bellevue a 7-0 lead in the second inning.
The Trojans got on the board in the top of the fourth inning on a solo homer to right center field by Roman.
An RBI double to center field by Kerns padded the Bruin lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Bellevue added a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly by Joey Jones in the sixth to increase the BU margin to 10-1
Bellevue gave up six runs in the seventh, including a grand slam by Hershfield as DSU closed the gap to 10-7.
The Bruins restored order in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run homer by Thompson, giving BU a 13-7 advantage.
Bellevue added three runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by an RBI single from Andy Smolinski and a sacrifice fly by Thompson, to complete the game's scoring at 16-7.
Josh Trejo earned the win, scattering five hits with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. Grant Mason collected his first save of the season, allowing three hits and two walks with one strikeout in 2.1 innings.

Tanner Moore went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored to lead the BU offense in the 10-1 win in the nightcap. Michael Calderon improved to 5-1 on the mound, fanning nine batters, while allowing seven hits and no walks to get the complete-game win.
Kelvin Nelson finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for Bellevue.
The Bruins took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third with a two-run triple by Moore and an RBI single by Lance Lutz.
The Trojans got one run back on an RBI single to right field by Corey Pasichnyk in the top of the fourth.
Bellevue exploded for five runs in the fifth, as four different Bruins drove in runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Kerns.
