Bellevue splits with Dakota State
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball team split with Dakota State University Friday at Westgate Field, winning the opener, 5-1 and falling in the nightcap, 5-4.
The loss in the second game snapped the Bruins' nine-game winning streak. Bellevue moved to 24-13 on the season. Dakota State is now 19-20 overall.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday (April 7) at Westgate Field.
Game 1: Bellevue 5, Dakota State 1
Trojan starter Josh Caven gave up a bases-loaded walk as the Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
A pair of RBI singles by Spencer Duggan and Brandon Thompson increased the BU lead to 3-0 in the second.
The Bruins plated a run in the fourth on an RBI double to center field by Tanner Moore, making it 4-0.
A sacrifice fly to left field by Dusty Kerns plated Bradley Reeves, giving BU a 5-0 margin in the seventh.
DSU avoided the shutout with a sacrifice fly to center field by Anyelo Roman that allowed pinch runner Corey Pasichnyk to score from third.
Kody McFarland (7-2) earned the complete-game win, scattering five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in nine innings.

The Trojans took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, highlighted by RBI singles from Anyelo Roman and Ryan Bourcier.
An RBI single by Kyle Holland and a sacrifice fly by Rays Roman made it 5-0 in the second.
A two-run triple by Mattson cut the DSU lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning.
The Bruins scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Tylor Pavel and a ground out RBI by Duggan to pull to within one run at 5-4. Trojan reliever Jason Hershfield struck out Tanner Moore to preserve the DSU victory, earning the save.
Seth Doxey got the win, allowing seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 6.1 innings of work.
