BU takes over MCAC lead with sweep over York

YORK, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball team took over the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference lead with a doubleheader sweep at York College Saturday afternoon, winning 6-4 and 6-5.
Bellevue improved to 20-12 on the season and 5-1 in the MCAC. York fell to 20-12 overall and 4-2 in league play.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday (March 31) in York.
Game 1: Bellevue 6, York 4
The Bruins used a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by Brandon Thompson, en route to the 6-4 win over York in the opener.
Kody McFarland (6-2) earned the win, scattering seven hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in six innings of work. Robert Greco recorded his third save of the year, allowing one hit, while striking out two batters in three innings of relief.
York plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a balk by McFarland that allowed Alec Abend to score from third.
The Bruins took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth, plating five runs, courtesy of a balk by York starter Isidro Carrioza, a sacrifice fly to center field by Tanner Moore, and a three-run homer by Thompson.
York closed the gap to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer by Abend and an RBI single by Josh Nuyten.
Bellevue added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Lance Lutz to increase the BU margin to 6-3. Nuyten added another RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to close the gap to 6-4 and close out the game's scoring. .

Once again, the Bruins used a five-run fifth inning to propel them to the 6-5 win in the nightcap. Five different Bruins drove in runs in the victory. Tylor Pavel finished 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and an RBI.
Gene Felise ripped three home runs for York.
Pavel led off the nightcap with a solo homer to left field. York tied it up in the second with a solo homer by Felise.
Back-to-back York homers, including Felise's second of the game, gave the Panthers a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Bellevue responded with five runs in the top of the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch, an RBI double by Spencer Duggan, a sacrifice fly by Moore, and RBI singles by Thompson and Dusty Kerns.
Felise knocked out his third homer of the game in the bottom of the sixth to pull York to within one run at 6-5.
Pete Talkington replaced Bradley Reeves in the bottom of the seventh, recording his second save of the season allowing a walk with no hits.
Bradley Reeves (2-0) earned the win, replacing starter Eric Locke, allowing just two hits while fanning three batters in 2.2 innings of work.
