OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- In the final day of the William Penn Classic, the Bellevue University softball team split a pair of games, downing Culver-Stockton, 5-2, before falling to Ashford University, 4-1, in the finale.
The loss to the Saints snapped the Bruins' nine-game winning streak.
Bellevue returns home on Wednesday, March 25, for a 4 p.m. doubleheader with Midland University at Hall of Fame Fields.
Bellevue 5, Culver-Stockton 2
The Wildcats grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a two-run triple to right field by Danielle Hearn. Bellevue quickly responded in the bottom of the first, scoring three two-out runs on an RBI double by Sayde Woten and a two-run homer by Alex Tooley.
The Bruins added two more runs in the top of the sixth, sparked by an RBI double to left center by Woten, giving the Bruins a 5-2 advantage.
Kelli Fisher picked up the win, improving to 7-2 on the season, scattering three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in six innings of work.
Taylor Mohler earned the save, entering in the top of the seventh, retiring the side, to preserve the 5-2 BU victory.
Woten finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two doubles and Tooley was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.
Ashford 4, Bellevue 1
After retiring the first five batters, including four on strikeouts, Mohler gave up three consecutive hits as the Saints took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Brianna De La Rosa.
The Bruins tied it up at 1-1 in the top of the third when Tooley drove in Emily Gigax with a double to center field after Gigax reached on an error by AU short stop Taylor Ellestad.
A two-run single by Alex Bitto and an RBI single by Siera Spahiu gave the Saints a 4-1 margin in the bottom of the fifth frame.
The Bruins threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs, but Gigax popped up to Ellestad to end the threat.
Mohler (8-5) suffered the loss, giving up six hits and no walks with nine strikeouts in four innings of work.
