Bruins split at Spring Games on Wednesday

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bellevue University softball team split a pair of games on Wednesday at the Spring Games, defeating Trinity International, 9-1, in the opener, before falling, 5-1, to Judson (Ill.) University in today's second game. 

With the split, the Bruins move to 10-5 on the season and 4-3 in the Spring Games.  

The Bruins will continue action with three games on Thursday at the Spring Games. BU will battle Hannibal-LaGrange at 8 a.m., Cornerstone at 10 a.m., and Spring Arbor at 2 p.m.

Bellevue 9, Trinity International 1

The Bruins got home runs by three different players and Lexi LeCalsey tossed a four-hitter as BU picked up a 9-1 win over Trinity International in six innings in the opening game of the day. 

Bellevue collected hits from nine different players as BU outhit the Trojans, 13-4, in the victory.

Grace Glotfelty finished 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and an RBI, Erin Sharpe was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs. Emily Gigax went 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs. 

An RBI single to left field by Kayla Lehigh scored Kaitlyn Kinman from third to give BU a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Trojans responded in the bottom of the second, tying the game on an RBI double to left field by Emily Doomis. 

Kinman's one-run single to left field scored Sharpe from second to help BU regain the lead at 2-1 in the top of the third frame. 

A three-run homer by Gigax and a solo shot by Glotfelty to lead off the inning extended the Bruin lead to 6-1 in the top of the fifth.  

LeCalsey got out of a bases-loaded-one-out jam in the bottom of the fifth, striking out the final two batters to keep BU's cushion at five runs. 

An RBI single by Randi Henry and a two-run line-drive home run to right field by Sharpe gave the Bruins a 9-1 edge in the top of the sixth inning.  

LeCalsey retired the final three batters to pick up her sixth victory of the year, improving to 6-3 on the season. She scattered four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in six innings of work. 

Judson 5, Bellevue 1

Despite outhitting Judson 6-4, the Bruins were plagued by six fielding errors and a passed ball, as the Eagles topped BU, 5-1 in the nightcap. 

JU took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Alexis Ruger in the top of the first inning and extended the lead to 2-0 in the second frame on an RBI double to center field by Hannah McDowell. 

The Bruins sliced the lead in half at 2-1, scoring on a fielding error by center fielder McDowell, allowing Glotfelty to score from third.  

The Eagles scored three runs in the fifth inning on four BU fielding errors and a passed ball to extend their lead to 5-1. 

Bellevue managed just one baserunner on one hit in the final three innings as Lauren Herlihy (6-5) earned the win, scattering four hits with one walk and four strikeouts in six innings in the circle. 

Emily Rochford (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in one inning of work.
